The prayerbook of Claude was produced around 1517 for the occasion of her crowning as Queen of France. The daughter of Anne de Bretagne and King Louis XII was married to François d'Angoulême, later King François I., at the age of 14. She passed away 10 years later from exhaustion after having given birth to 8 children, always under the pressure of having to present an heir to the throne. Claude was a frail and well-liked cultured and gentle person with an extraordinary appreciation of the arts. The arrangement of the prayerbook and the selection of the saints depicted were said to be her own choice.
