Das Buch der Liebenden :
Ms. 388 of the Musée Condé in Chantilly
Simbach am Inn: Müller & Schindler, 2005
This manuscript is a bit of a mystery: A love story without words. It covers 15 full page illuminations accompanied by 12 ornamented pages depicting an intricate set of symbols of courtly love. The illuminations illustrate the lovers' moments of joy and mourning and show them dancing, riding together, meeting in public and in solitude. A love story in pictures out of the France of the early 16th century. There is no text known that might have inspired the artist to the sequence of illuminations and the eloquent miniatures that are steeped in colorful symbols. In a playful way they address a viewer who is fully cognizant of the pictorial and literary tradition of courtly love in the late medieval period.
