This work was the largest publishing enterprise ever in the history of the French book industry. The group of encyclopedistes convened by Diderot strived to assemble the complete documentation of knowledge available in the late 18th century. Outstanding writers, learned men, philosophers, theologians, scientists and craftsmen contributed to a universal compendium that combined the texts with exquisite illustrations and drawings. They identify the technological advancement of the time as well as the historic perspective of the arts and sciences prevalent in the age of enlightenment.
