The anonymous manuscript containing the text of the Litauische Wolfenbütteler Postille of 1573 is a unique source (Codex unicus) held in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel since 1648/49. It is a copy of a collection of Lutheran sermons that originated in Prussian territory of the16th century and as such it is the oldest extensive document in the literary Lithuanian language. At the same time it is the most significant testimony to the dissemination of the Reformation in the Lithuanian language area and thus one of the most important sources for the history of the Lithuanian language and church culture.
The text is for the first time published in a facsimile edition together with a critical commentary including a comprehensive introduction and index.
