Centennial of Ahmed Adnan Saygun:

This year Ahmed Adnan Saygun, the arguably most famous Turkish composer of the 20th century, would have celebrated his centennial. His studies in Paris in combination with his research on traditional Turkish music formed the basis for his own style which was pathbreaking for a European influenced contemporary Turkish music. Saygun, who was born in Izmir, received a scholarship from the Turkish state at the age of 21 which enabled him to spend three years of study in Paris. Here he was introduced to the French impressionism and met composers like Charles-Marie Widor. He studied composition with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum and harmonics and contrapunctal studies with Eugène Borrel.

After his return to Turkey, Saygun began his research on Anatolian folk music. The culmination of these studies was an expedition together with Béla Bartók that led them into the different regions of Anatolia to collect and transcribe folk songs. This research proved to be a pioneering effort for his own compositions. Turkish folk music with its melodies in particular, its irregular metrical patterns and forms of dance was a tremendous inspiration for Saygun. During the thirties he experimented with compositions of different genres and wrote two operas commissioned by Ataturk. But it was his oratorio "Yunus Emre" premiered in 1946 which marked his international breakthrough. Saygun was the most important of the "Turkish five", the first generation of Turkish composers, and a composer who had an exceptional range of chamber and orchestra works to his credit.
