Die Entstehung von Goethes Werken in Dokumenten (EGW):
Founded by Momme Mommsen
Continued and edited by Katharina Mommsen (Stanford University)
Berlin: de Gruyter
To be complete in 18 volumes.
This documentation on the genesis of Goethe's works was started in the 1950s by Momme and Katharina Mommsen at the Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften in East Berlin. The editorial board of the EGW is currently located at the Georg-August University in Göttingen where editing of the work continues through the support of the Mommsen Foundation for the Advancement of Goethe Research in California.
The work reconstructs the genesis of Goethe's works, based on all of the currently available documents, letters and personal journal entries written by Goethe himself and those close to him. The material includes numerous texts that were previously unknown or largely ignored. The documents are arranged in chronological order and provide a unique insight into the creative processes behind Goethe's works and into the intellectual and personal cosmos in which Goethe created them.
The first two volumes have a bit of a typical German history. They were published in 1958 by Akademie Verlag but then the set was discontinued. The editors were not given access to the source materials held by the then East German Academy any longer once the Berlin Wall had gone up in 1961. The project has now been resumed and de Gruyter Publishers plan to release one additional volume every other year.
